Winter Sunrise on the Grand Canal
There are moments in Venice that feel as if time itself has taken a breath. This photograph, taken from the crest of the Rialto Bridge, captures one of those rare instances — just after sunrise on a winter morning, when the Grand Canal lies in near-perfect stillness and the city is momentarily yours alone.

Venice wakes slowly in winter. Before the tourists arrive and the hum of the city begins, there’s a rare kind of stillness that settles over the stone. It was on one of these mornings that I found myself beneath the colonnades of the Doge’s Palace, long before the sun had risen above the rooftops.
